Ed Campbell

Ed completed a Master’s cum laude and PhD in education, at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Over the past 16 years, he has done work in: academic writing consulting; online learning design; digital technologies; language, literacy and teacher education; multimodal semiotics; and early researcher training.

His doctorate focused on the ways in which newly qualified English teachers used technology in their lessons. The analysis of the daily challenges that these individuals faced prompted his interest in the provision of support to mentorship, training and research professionals. He hopes to develop this interest into a fully fledged consultancy in the future, perhaps by adopting an applied ethics approach.

Since moving to France in 2022, he has engaged in the following projects:

  1. Co-organising the Volvo Research and Educational Foundations (VREF) 2023 conference, which was held in March 2023 in Paris, France
  2. Redesigning, building and co-facilitating an online academic literacies course for young Sub-Sahara African academics practicing in the fields of transport studies and the broader environmental, civil engineering and urban planning fields, funded by the VREF and administered by Senghor (2022 & 2023)
  3. Adapting the above courses into three handbooks for facilitators and students
  4. Organising an online seminar on “Cities, Practices and Technologies: Urban Mobility in the Global South”
  5. Writing a book on work and happiness
  6. Establishing a support programme for Sub-Sahara African PhD students and mid-career researchers in mobility and transport studies
  7. Working towards a consulting practice to support professionals on a more ad hoc base
