Dr Herrie Schalekamp is a researcher and advisor on institutional and service reorganisation processes in urban mass transport in Africa.
Since 2014 he has worked as a consultant with organisations including the World Bank, SSATP, GIZ, Codatu and the South African National Treasury, in activities supported by AFD, PPIAF, SECO and the Volvo Research and Educational Foundations (VREF), amongst others. He is an associate researcher at the Laboratoire Ville Mobilité Transport in Ile-de-France, as well as an adjunct lecturer at the French National Civil Engineering School (ENPC), at Science Po Paris and at the University of Cape Town (UCT).
Herrie has particular expertise on the interface between the formal and informal sectors in large-scale urban transport reform projects, and in designing and running related capacity building initiatives for national ministries, local government, the private sector and academic stakeholders. In his role as research officer at UCT from 2008 to 2021, he was supporting manager of the African Centre of Excellence in Transport, a multi-country research partnership on public transport and active mobility, funded by VREF, and also convened a three-year capacity building programme for informal transport businesses in Cape Town.
Herrie holds a Doctorate in Civil Engineering and a Master’s degree in Transport Studies – both from UCT – and co-directs Mtracs, a non-profit association that supports communities of mentors, trainers and researchers. He continues to learn about people and cities by walking and using public transport, reads science-fiction to further imagine how the world could be different, and is a home DIY enthusiast.
